Electronic stability control systems in trucks could save lives

There is no question that trucks are very important to life for many who live not only in Ottawa but in communities throughout all of Canada. Unfortunately, as is the case with all motor vehicles they also present the risk of being involved in an accident. Because of the size and weight of the vehicles when other vehicles or pedestrians are involved, the outcome can be deadly.

Truck accidents can happen for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they are due to shifting loads. When the load a truck is transporting shifts, it can cause the trailer to flip onto its side. In addition to backing up traffic, an incident such as this one could inflict serious injuries upon those involved, even death.

Recognizing how risky these types of accidents can be, the Ministry of Transportation recently announced its support of the use of electronic stability control systems in truck. In these systems sensors which are installed in the truck, can correct a tractor trailer before it jackknifes or slips. Light duty vehicles and cars have been required to have the systems installed in all new vehicles since 2011.

This is not the only safety system that the ministry in interested in having installed in trucks. It also would like electronic logging devices to be included. These seek to help drivers comply with the number of hours they are allowed to drive each month, by tracking the time each individual spends behind the wheel.

When someone is injured in an accident of any type with a truck, they may decide to seek compensation for those injuries. If the negligence of another party is to blame, a personal injury lawsuit could make sense.
