Recovering from a spinal injury involves hard work, great expense

While it is of course sad when anyone suffers a serious spinal injury, this is particularly true when the person in this situation is a young person. Learning how to accommodate being unable to use one’s legs, or all limbs, can be difficult to do. A young Ottawa area man, who fractured the seventh cervical vertebrae in a hockey accident, was told that he might never walk again. Through hard work, and medical devices, he has beaten the odds and can now take a few steps.

This feat has been accomplished with the assistance of a bioness rehabilitation unit. The device restores muscle function and re-educates brain signals via electrical stimulation. He also uses a walking pole but hopes to get rid of the pole soon. The rehab he attends twice a week and the massage therapy he receives, are also contributing to his success.

As reader can likely imagine, in addition to hard work, rehabilitation following a spinal injury also involves great expense. To help address this, supporters in this young man’s community have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help cover those expenses.

The financial burden an injury of this nature places upon the person who suffers it can be difficult to handle. This is one reason why people who are hurt in an accident that is the result of the negligence of another party, seek financial compensation from the responsible party. While the harm inflicted cannot be undone, recovering damages may make it easier for the injured person as well as his or her caregivers, to navigate their new way of life.
