Under-aged driver charged in fatal accident

There's a saying in popular culture that nothing good happens after 2:00 in the morning. It certainly seems bad news often comes in the middle of the night. That was exactly the case for the families of two Ontario youths this summer after a tragic accident on a quiet highway.

The incident took place in the early morning of July 26, 2016, on Highway 10 just outside Orangeville, Ontario. The vehicle involved, a late-model minivan, was travelling north when it left the highway for reasons unknown and struck multiple objects including a utility pole and a brick gateway. The gate and the van were both severely damaged in the accident.

There were two occupants in the vehicle: the driver, a 14-year old male, and a 12-year old female passenger. The driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, and the passenger was declared deceased at the scene. Though the accident took place at the entrance to a youth camp, neither of the involved parties attended the camp.

Because the accused is a minor, his name will not be released by police, and the family of the victim have declined to release her name. The vehicle was allegedly stolen, though further details have not been made public. Police charged the young man with failure to comply with an undertaking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. He was scheduled to appear in court on July 29, 2016.

Due to the multiple charges facing the accused, and the added factor of his young age, this may become a complicated legal proceeding. For the family of the victim, a painful road lies ahead. However, the assistance of a personal injury lawyer could provide them, and anyone who has suffered due to an accident, assurance that justice will be actively sought.
