Strange case of elder abuse involving apple projectiles

There are many categories of people in society that, for one reason or another, end up at least partially marginalized. Unfortunately, the elderly often fall into one such category. Their age and accompanying lack of physical capability can leave them vulnerable to persecution and mistreatment. One sad and unusual case of elder abuse occurred recently in Ontario.

The assault took place on August 25, 2016, at a home in Chesterville, approximately 80 kilometers south of Ottawa. The victim, a 90-year old woman, was alone in her house when she became aware there were intruders present. She was unable to see the assailants clearly or discern how many individuals were there. The intruder or intruders were between the victim and the only exit from the home, preventing her escape.

In a very bizarre twist, the intruder began throwing rotten apples at the woman. The apples had been collected by the woman and were stored outside the home. The victim endured approximately an hour of being pelted with apples before the intruder left. A niece reported the incident to police days afterward when she visited her aunt and saw the mess and heard the story. There are presently no suspects.

It is an unfortunate fact that many cases of elder abuse, in Ottawa and across Canada, go unreported. Any individual who has suffered an assault, or who is aware of such an incident, should contact authorities for help. A personal injury law firm may also be of comfort and assistance during a difficult time like this.
