Ottawa car accident sends elderly couple to hospital

Two elderly Ottawa residents suffered life-threatening injuries in a car accident on Feb. 20. Their vehicle was so badly damaged in the collision that fire crews had to employ what paramedics called "heavy extraction" to help one of the victims from the car.

The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Innes Road at the intersection of Anderson Road in Ottawa. A sedan carrying the two victims, a married couple, initiated a left turn from the westbound lanes of Innes Road onto Anderson Road. A pickup truck that was travelling in the eastbound lanes of Innes Road struck the sedan's passenger side as the car turned.

Emergency crews took both occupants of the sedan, a 76-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man, to the trauma centre of The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus where they remained at the time of reporting. Fire crews that responded to the accident removed one of the sedan's doors in order to free one of the victims. The pickup truck's 34-year-old male driver suffered no injuries in the accident.

Police redirected traffic from Innes Road to southbound Anderson Road as investigators processed the scene of the accident. An investigation was still underway at the time of reports.

Complications from life-threatening injuries may severely impact car accident victims' quality of life and leave them in need of in-home care, housekeeping and other services. The costs of these services are often prohibitive and lead some people to consider filing personal injury suits to seek compensation for their injuries and damages resulting from their accidents. Personal injury lawyers may be able to advise victims of the steps they can take to initiate a lawsuit and possible outcomes, which may include settlements from insurance companies.
