Northern Ontario crash claims man's life

Authorities with the Marathon OPP reported that a 35-year-old Orillia man was killed in a motor vehicle collision on Feb. 20. The accident reportedly occurred about 15 kilometres west of Marathon on Highway 17.

Officials stated that a vehicle travelling west on the highway lost control, striking a guardrail while rounding a curve. That car came to a stop, partly on the guardrail and partly on the roadway. An eastbound vehicle then stopped to assist the first car. As two men were standing outside, another westbound car apparently lost control and struck the first vehicle, hitting the two men.

Emergency medical staff transported four people from the scene of the accident for treatment of their injuries. The Orillia man was pronounced dead while he was receiving treatment. A Marathon man reportedly suffered severe injuries to his head. The hospital indicated that the man might be transported to a major hospital as a result. The other two people were treated for injuries deemed minor and were later released. At the time of reporting, police did not say what might have caused the accident.

When a person is killed in a car accident in which another driver is at fault, their family may be able to hold the at-fault driver civilly liable through a wrongful death civil lawsuit. Through a lawsuit, the family may be able to seek and recover compensation for their suffered losses. Available damages may include medical expenses, transportation expenses for the family's visiting the person in the hospital, reasonable funeral and burial expenses, lost current and future income, pain and suffering and the loss of their loved one's companionship. Families may want to consult with a personal injury lawyer about the facts of their loved one's case and the possibility of compensation before filing an action.
